Ned Stevenson, left, a 57-year-old retired businessman from Chaplin, Conn., receives his freshman "beanie". When he entered UConn in 1951, he received statewide media attention, as it was rare at the time for someone of his age to begin college. The beanie, a requirement for freshman from the early 20th century until 1969, has the graduation year 1955 imprinted on it.
